How many diapers should I order per week?
- Typically, you would need 80 for newborns, 60 for infants, and 50 for toddlers.
- You will receive the full number of diapers ordered for your first and second deliveries. You will then be on a rotation system. You will be receiving the same number of diapers you turned in the previous week.
|
|
|
How many diaper covers should I need?
If you are washing the covers yourself, it depends on how frequently you do laundry. You will need a bare minimum of 5-8 covers. If we are washing your rented diaper service covers we will provide as many covers as you need a week, typically 10-20.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Can I get a refund for diapers I did not use?
- You are charged for the full amount ordered regardless of usage. Essentially is it like renting a movie, you pay for the movie even if you do not watch it.
- If you find you are regularly using fewer diapers, contact our office and we can drop the number of diapers delivered as well as decrease your weekly fee for future weeks.
- Clean Diapers should only be turned in after contacting our office and discussing a vacation hold, size change, number drop, or termination of service.
|
|
|
What kind of diaper cover do you recommend?
Simply the one that fits your baby the best. Some brands of diaper covers fit your baby better than others. We recommend testing out the various diaper covers to find the one that works best for your baby.
Check out some of the product reviews (You will be leaving our website to visit Diaperpin.com). Keep in mind, this much information can be overwhelming.

I'm about to run out of diapers, what do I do?
Please do not wash the diapers yourself! It's good to have some back up diapers on hand just in case this happens. Try Seventh Generation biodegradable diapers or gDiapers refills which can be used with our diaper covers. If you need more cloth prefolds, please call our office and we will deliver more diapers as soon as we can. Unfortunately we have to charge $10.00 for a special drop off for our time and gas.
|
|
|
Can I wash the diapers myself?
Please NEVER wash the diapers yourself. Home laundering frequently results in discoloration, permanent staining, chlorine damage, etc., and you will be charged for the damages.
|
|
|
What is your washing process?
Our wash process takes about an hour and 15 minutes to complete and has 12 different steps and uses water temperatures high enough to
sanitize diapers. We start by flushing any matter out 3 times. Then we add soap made by Eco-Lab which is very free-rinsing
and leaves no residual traces in the final product. Next
comes the bleach to sanitize and remove stains from the diapers. We are
very careful to use the minimum amount of bleach necessary. As a matter
of a fact we use only one cup of bleach per 100 lbs of diapers. The
reason we can use such a small amount is that we get an economy of
scale because our washers are so large plus the potency of bleach
doubles for every 10 degree rise in water temperature. When the bleach
cycle is complete the concentration of bleach is only 50 ppm. So the
amount of chlorine that goes through the sewage system is actually
pretreated for the sanitation department. If you are concerned about
the use of Chlorine we can assure you that we only the minimum amount
necessary for our purposes and we are extremely careful to remove and
residual bleach from our diapers before they arrive at your doorstep. After a few more rinses we add Anti-chlor to the diapers. This removes any bleach left from the diapers. Your diapers will have LESS RESIDUAL BLEACH IN THEM THAN THE CITY WATER SUPPLY. Once the diapers have been dechlorinated we need to balance the pH of
the diapers to insure that the diapers match your baby's skin. This way
we can reduce the occurrence of diaper rash. In most cases to zero! To
achieve this we use a "sour" which is a citrus acid solution calibrated to bring the
diapers into a neutral pH. Again this solution is very safe and
environmentally-friendly.

|
Do I have to use pins?
No, you can secure the
pre-fold diaper onto your baby with a diaper cover. You can
also use a Snappi® to help prevent blowouts getting on the
covers.
|
|
|
What is a Snappi?®
A Snappi?® is safe, easy to
use safety pin replacement. The T-shaped fastener is made from a
stretchable non-toxic material. The Snappi® has grips on each
end that hook into the cloth diaper fabric to ensure a snug-fitting
diaper with enough natural movement for the baby.
|
|
|
How should I wash the diaper covers?
First of all, DO NOT WASH COVERS YOU ARE RENTING FROM SMILE, MOMMY. ONLY WASH COVERS THAT YOU OWN. Most covers can be washed with your regular
laundry. Some covers require line drying. Be sure not to use bleach on
any synthetic product as they will yellow.
|
|
|
What can I do about leakage?
- Change
your baby's diaper whenever it is
soiled.
- Make sure the cover does not have gaps around
the legs and no part of the cloth diaper is peeking out of the
cover.
- Use a Snappi® to hold the diaper in
place.
- Use a doubler or fold another diaper in thirds
and use as a liner in the diaper for more absorbency.
- For nighttime heavy wetters, use a wool wrap
or a Bummis fleece.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
What can I do if my diaper pail stinks?
- Sprinkle a little baking soda in the bottom of your
pail.
- If you would like to use your own essential
oil, such as tea tree oil, tape a cotton ball with a few drops of the
oil under the lid of your diaper
pail.
- Wash your pail every once in a
while.
|
|
|
How should I pack my diaper bag?
We recommend packing a
diaper cover, 2-3 cloth pre-folds, 4-5 flannel wipes, and a small nylon
washable bag for packing soiled nappies away!

Do you have any advice or techniques for Potty Training?
We recommend buying a potty around 18 months. Have it around for the child to ask questions, play with and be comfortable with it. Have the child wear elastic waist pants or clothes that are easy for the child to pull down him/herself. Refrain from dressing your child in "onesies" with snaps in the crotch. Start by having the child pull down her/his pants before diaper changes and when changing clothes. Invite the child into the bathroom when you go to the bathroom and tell them that you are going potty. When your child has successfully gone potty several times, go cold turkey! Stay home one weekend and focus on getting your child potty trained. Start by putting underwear on your child and ask them if they have to go potty every 20 minutes or so. It will be a messy weekend - but you will be surprised at how they will get the hang of it after 2 days focused on just potty training. They will probably have an accident or two a day, but these will dwindle down. Sometimes you might have a week where they have an accident everyday, but it isn't time to go back to diapers - its just part of the process. Keep with it! They will soon realize what they are supposed to do. Put training pants on at naps and bedtime until your child starts waking up with a dry diaper. Good Luck!

I'm considering using cloth because of the environment, can you compare them to disposables?
Disposables:
It takes 440 to 880 pounds of wood pulp and 286 pounds of
plastic (including packaging) per year to supply one baby with
disposable diapers, according to Environment Canada. Dioxin, a
chemical on the EPA's list of most toxic cancer-linked chemicals, is a
by-product of this manufacturing process.

Disposables
also pose risks during use. The wood pulp, plastic, sodium polyacrylate
(which turns urine into gel), dyes, and fragrances in continual contact
with a baby's skin worry some of those who study infertility and
hormone-mimicking chemicals. Several components of disposables
(toluene, xylene, ethyl-benzene, styrene, and isopropylbenzene),
according to a report in the October 1999 issue of the Archives of
Environmental Health, are bronchial irritants associated with asthma.

Each
year, 18 billion disposable diapers burden US landfills, combining
plastic, wood pulp, fecal matter and urine, and bio-hazards, including
live vaccines from immunizations. The bundled fecal matter requires
200-500 years to decompose and can contaminate ground water. In
contrast, waste water from washing diapers is treated, at least in most
municipalities.

Cloth:
It takes less than 22
pounds of cotton to supply one baby with reusable cotton
diapers for two years. A study by the British Landbank Consultancy
determined that, factoring in cotton growing, the manufacture and use
of disposable diapers requires twice the water use and three times the
energy of cloth diapers. (See www.realnappycompany.com/NappyFacts.htm.)

Finally, Jane McConnell in Mothering Magazine in
June 1998 notes that babies in cloth diapers are changed more
frequently, a factor that reduces diaper rash. As a bonus, she says
that a child in cloth diapers actually knows when he or she is wet, and
hence, is toilet trained earlier.

Cotton diapers are made of natural materials and so biodegrade.
What are Smile, Mommy's future plans?
We are fortunate enough to have a great family behind Smile Mommy and with that great family comes the opportunity to use land in Dickson County to create a very environmentally friendly diaper service. On this land is a natural spring and hundreds of acres of wide open land. Our dream is to wash our diapers using this natural spring water, heat it using solar energy and air dry the diapers on clotheslines strung across the fields. Not only are we planning this, but we also have plans of purchasing a diesel step van and converting it to use bio-diesel which we will make ourselves using leftover oil from surrounding restaurants. One of the bi-products of making bio-diesel is glycerine soap which we hope to use to wash our diapers. This is our 5-year plan and will start next year with the bio-diesel van.
